Jan G. Dickey, 81, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Monday, July 31, 2023, at St. Luke’s Transitional Care in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Family will greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at Marion Methodist Church, officiated by Pastor Mike Morgan. Burial will follow at Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion.
Jan was born on March 3, 1942, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Lester “Bud” DeWayne and Mary Louise (Sigmund) Dickey. He was a graduate of Marion High School and went on to earn his teaching degree from State College of Iowa (University of Northern Iowa), and his master’s degree from Iowa State University. On June 1, 1968, Jan was united in marriage to Carolyn “Lyn” Ann Huinker at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. He worked at Wilson Junior High and then McKinley Middle School in Cedar Rapids, until retirement. He taught Industrial Arts and then Industrial Tech. Jan was a member of the Marion Historical Society and volunteered at the REACT Center. He enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking, working on cars and home improvement projects. Time with family was most important to him, especially spending time with his granddaughters. Jan will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Jan is survived and lovingly remembered by his sons, Kevin (Mia) and Scott (Beth), both of Marion; four grandchildren, Aelwyn, Fiona, Freya, and Maren; two sisters, Cheri Dickey of Cedar Rapids and Jane (Tom) McCoy of Marion; and a niece, Lisa (Mike) Koury of North Liberty, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife of 53 years, Lyn.
