Madonna M. Hartl, 87, of rural Cedar Rapids, passed away at her home early Thursday morning, July 27, 2023. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church by the Rev. Dennis Conway. Burial will follow at Campbell Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Papich-Kuba Funeral Home East, 1228 Second St. SE, and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the church. The rosary begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Madonna is survived by her children, Cindy (Tim) Spivey, Tiffin, Mike (Jeri) Hartl, Mechanicsville, Kathy (Ken) Snyder, Ely and Dennis (Jill) Hartl, Cedar Rapids; 14 grandchildren, Ted Spivey, Amy Yaukovitz, Jessica Spivey, Danyl Lown, Katie Spivey, Josh Hartl, Jeremy Hartl, Melissa Bernett, Michelle Snyder, Austin Snyder, Sarah Snyder, McKayla Hook, McKenzie Hartl and Amelia Hartl; 17 great-grandchildren; siblings, Shirley Vislisel and Orville (Donna) Meskimen; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Edward “Sonny”; her parents, Clarence and Regina (Ockenfels) Meskimen; and many brothers and sisters.
Madonna was born April 4, 1936, in Norway, Iowa, and graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1953. She married Edward D. Hartl May 8, 1956, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Edward died on Sept. 1, 2021.
She had been a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church since her marriage and was also a member of Lodge Prokop Velky 137 C.S.A. Madonna was a devoted farmwife and enjoyed raising a large garden for many years.
Memorial donations may be given to Hospice of Mercy and St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.
