Philip L. Rummells, 100, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Sunday, July 22, 2023. A service will be held at noon Friday, Aug. 11, at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, followed by a graveside service at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A luncheon will be held after the service at the Cedar Memorial Family Center.
Philip was born Oct. 3, 1922, in West Branch, Iowa, to William and Mabel (Endsley) Rummells. After graduating from high school, he moved to Seattle, Wash., to build destroyers for the war effort. When the U.S. entered World War II, Philip joined the Navy and served as a ship repairman in Guam. After the war he returned to Iowa.
On March 31, 1951, Philip was united in marriage to Ida Belle Phillips in Cedar Rapids. They raised two children and cared for Ida Belle’s mother in their home. Philip worked for Stamats Publishing Company until his retirement. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.
Philip is survived by his children, Tonda (Gary) Zeek of Indianapolis, Ind., and Kevin (Teri) Rummells of Viera, Fla.; grandchildren, Philip (Danielle) Rummells of Marshfield, Wis., Wesley (Kirarae) Rummells of Wahiawa, Hawaii, Andrea Zeek of Indianapolis, Ind., and John (Kristin) Zeek of Indianapolis, Ind.; great-grandchildren, Savannah Rummells and Joseph Rummells; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Philip was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Belle; his parents; and all nine of his siblings.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your favorite charity. The family thanks the staff at Cottage Grove Place Healthcare Center and Compassus Hospice for their care of our beloved father.
