A vision for downtown C.R.

As I reflect upon the remarkable journey of captivating cities across the planet, I am reminded of the truth that lies within: a vibrant and attractive downtown is the heart that propels any city to its true potential. Having had the privilege of traversing numerous landscapes across the country and the developed world, this adage resonates deeply within me. Presently, our beloved downtown Cedar Rapids faces a challenge shared by city centers worldwide — the aftermath of the pandemic, which led to the loss of thousands in the daily workforce. However, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, we have the opportunity to re-envision our strategy and forge a path to an ideal future state for our downtown in the next five to seven years.
In the endeavor to serve all — both the old and young, locals and visitors — downtowns that stand out and excel become living testaments to our past while illuminating our future. Guided by this vision, the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance, Downtown SSMID (the business improvement district representing 72-blocks in downtown Cedar Rapids), City of Cedar Rapids, and Linn County have embarked on a collaborative journey with a consultant from Denver to re-imagine our road map and strategy. Throughout this visioning process twenty-five stakeholder sessions were convened, and a community survey was launched that garnered 1,500 respondents. Their valuable ideas and insights have helped to start paving the way forward with one concept emerging as the clear priority of our future: embracing the Cedar River.
Our majestic Cedar River, once a harbinger of disaster during the historic flood, is now on its way to becoming a symbol of resilience and hope. With the city’s flood control system nearing 50% completion, this natural asset is being transformed into a trove of recreational opportunities. Trails atop levees, verdant parks and green spaces thoughtfully designed to protect us during times of potential crisis will double as alluring public amenities to be cherished during tranquil days.
Another driving force behind these transformative endeavors is none other than ConnectCR, an inspiring collaboration of engaged citizens. Their dedication and tireless efforts will soon bear fruit — a magnificent pedestrian bridge, the Alliant LightLine, linking New Bohemia to Czech Village, the breathtaking metamorphosis of Cedar Lake into a recreational haven. ConnectCR, a public-private partnership, embodies the essence of Cedar Rapids’ next era, seamlessly tied to the very river that flows through our city’s core.
Beyond these remarkable projects lies another notable trend taking shape across the United States. Large metropolises, once coveted for their allure, have lost their luster due to soaring living costs, rendering them untenable for the middle class. Simultaneously, rural America faces an exodus, with limited opportunities and a dearth of activities pushing people away. Amid this backdrop, Cedar Rapids finds itself in a desirable ‘Goldilocks’ zone — not too big, yet not too small. We stand on the cusp of what many experts hail as the era of the mid-sized city, a fortuitous position that promises meaningful quality of life and boundless opportunities.
The tenacity and foresight of our city government, promoting growth and development with the mantra of being ‘open for business’ and ‘welcome is our language,’ are ideals of hope and positivity in an otherwise tumultuous and polarized nation. As a community that has surmounted adversity time and again, we have emerged stronger with each challenge. Successfully implementing the forthcoming Vision Plan will serve as our catalyst to ascend new heights and distinguish ourselves from our peers.
Let us not rest on our laurels, real or perceived. As we stride forward, other cities will undoubtedly strive for their idyllic future visions too. It is our collective responsibility to propel Cedar Rapids into an even brighter and bolder tomorrow, fostering a downtown that radiates with inclusivity, innovation, and boundless possibilities. Together, let us shape a future that not only makes us proud but stands as a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.
