Several beers produced by Eastern Iowa breweries racked up top awards at the 2023. U.S. Open Beer Championship.
Toppling Goliath Brewing in Decorah won four gold medals, most with its “Sue” varieties. Pseudo Sue won the top prize in the American Juicy or Hazy Pale Ale category, Seismic Sue in the Triple IPA category, King Sue in the New England/Juicy DIPA category and KBBS Reserve 2022 in the Barrel Aged Strong Breakfast Stouts category.
Toppling Goliath also received the prestigious 2023 Grand National Championship after securing four gold medals.
Big Grove Brewery in Iowa City won gold in the American Beer/Fruit Beer Grapefruit category with its Citrus Surfer.
The expansive beer competition in Oxford, Ohio, also awarded gold medals to Full Fledged Brewing Company in Council Bluffs and Exile Brewing in Des Moines earlier this month.
“For the second time this year, Iowa breweries have been recognized as some of the best and brightest,” said Iowa Brewers Guild executive director Noreen Otto. “When Iowans drink local, they’re drinking some of the best craft beer in the world.”
