Mike Koehler
Cedar Rapids
Mike Koehler, 60, died unexpectedly Jan. 31, 2023. Mike was born April 23, 1962, in Iowa City. He was raised in Cedar Rapids by his loving parents as the middle son of three boys. Mike had an active childhood making friends, playing tennis, bowling and riding mini bikes with his brothers. Mike was a graduate of Washington High School and the University of Iowa.
Although Mike valiantly dealt with challenges the last several years, he lived a remarkable life. Mike touched the hearts of many. He was kind, likeable, energetic and loving. Mike exuded a contagious charm that was complemented by his fabulous smile.
When Mike entered a room or walked into a party, you knew he was there. He was a unique force. With his gregarious nature, he truly enjoyed “chatting people up,” as he called it. His outgoing qualities and strong work ethic led Mike to be a natural salesman. He enjoyed an accomplished career in the telecommunications industry in both Cedar Rapids and Denver.
Mike especially loved Colorado. He maximized his 25 years in Denver with time in the mountains, hiking, skiing and attending countless concerts and sporting events with his wonderful Colorado friends.
Mike was high energy and adventurous. He traveled the world, enjoying fine restaurants and new experiences. He was a shopper who had an affinity for high end clothing. Later in life, he developed an interest in cooking and became quite good with his creations. He was a fan of nice cars and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
A lifelong bachelor, Mike valued his family tremendously. In recent years, while living in Cedar Rapids again, Mike helped care for his parents. He was meticulous about caring for their cars and lawn, being particularly dutiful after the derecho.
Mike is survived by his parents, Judge Thomas Koehler (Ret.) and Lorraine Koehler; his brother, Bill (Bev) Koehler of Kansas City; nephews, Ben (Abbey) Koehler of Des Moines, Matthew Koehler of Kansas City; and niece, Ally Koehler of Kansas City. Mike is also survived by many relatives all over the United States.
Mike was preceded in death by his brother, Steve, in 1980; as well as his fraternal grandparents, George and Louise Koehler; and maternal grandparents, Dr. Vernon and Irene Kaliher.
A funeral Mass will be held for Mike on Saturday, Aug. 19, at 11 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. A private burial for the family will occur at Mount Calvary Cemetery immediately after the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to United Action for Youth, Iowa City or Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation.
Additionally, all are welcome for a Celebration of Life for Mike, which will be held later in the day on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 5 to 9 p.m. at The Hotel at Kirkwood Center in the Tippie Room (on the Kirkwood College campus). An “Open Mic for Mike” will be part of the casual evening where memories and stories can be shared. Food and drink will be served.
