CEDAR RAPIDS — The former Marriott Hotel at 1200 Collins Rd. NE is now the Radisson Hotel Cedar Rapids.
A tall Radisson sign was planted this week at the hotel at 1200 Collins Rd. NE, vying for attention of those buzzing down the busy street.
The 220-room, seven story Marriott was sold at an auction in May. The nearly 188,000-square-foot building comes with 8.32 acres of property.
The purchase price was not announced, but documents filed at the Linn County Recorder's Office indicate the purchase price was around $8.1 million.
The hotel will remain open for business during a comprehensive renovation, according to a news release from the Galaxy Hotels Group. No details on the renovation or its cost were provided.
Radisson Hotels Americas is part of Choice Hotels International.
The Radisson Hotel Cedar Rapids is the first hotel conversion in the United States since Choice Hotels acquired Radisson Hotels Americas in 2022, according to a news release.
The hotel's owners are Voyage Capital Group, with operations by Galaxy Hotels Group, a hotel management company based in Frisco, Texas, and operating in in nine states.
“We are thrilled to be a part of the vibrant Cedar Rapids community with our operation of the newly branded Radisson Hotel Cedar Rapids,” Scott Nadel, chief operating officer of the Galaxy Hotels Group, said in a statement. “Radisson is one of the most recognized hotel brands and brings great value to the Cedar Rapids hospitality landscape.”
The hotel was built for $14 million and opened in 1988 as the Collins Plaza and Convention Center. It became the Cedar Rapids Marriott in 2004 when Marriott renovated guest rooms and redesigned the hotel’s ballrooms, meeting rooms and public spaces.
John Q. Hammons Hotels transferred the hotel in September 2005 to Atrium Finance under a no-consideration deed.
The hotel was damaged in the August 2020 derecho and underwent repairs, including replacement of wet drywall on floors one through seven, and replacement of two letters on the Marriott sign.
