FROM THE HEART: A Cedar Rapids husband and wife, requesting anonymity, gave Kirkwood Community College $350,000 to help wounded veterans and their families. Kirkwood in turn created a Purple Heart Scholarship fund to assist the education of veterans awarded the military honor or their spouses or children.

LAKE DELHI REBOUND: Reconstruction of the Lake Delhi dam, heavily damaged by flooding in 2008 and 2010, is expected to be completed this year. It appropriately will include expanded public recreation opportunities, one of the conditions for getting state assistance. We respect that not everyone agrees this dam should be rebuilt, restoring the lake, in part because of concerns about environmental impact on the river. But given the established lake community and the impact on the county's economic and tax revenue, we think this is good news overall.

WE'RE WITH YOU: University of Iowa President Sally Mason is among academic leaders who oppose the boycott of Israeli academic institutions, of which the American Studies Association is part. Cheers to Mason. This is a misguided initiative that suppresses academic freedom and the exchange of information and ideas.
