Bruce John Penning: Father, Grandfather, Brother, Son and Friend, was received into heaven by his precious Lord and Savior, Jesus, on July 11, 2023.
He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly Sherman; three daughters, Abigail (Philip) Clemons of Marion, Hannah (Justin) Smith of Vinton and Rebekah Penning of LaPorte City; five grandchildren, Isabel, Maxwell and River Clemons and Lincoln and Lucas Smith. Bruce is also survived by siblings, Blanche, Denise, Ted, David and Gene, and their respective families; as well as a large extended family and a close-knit church family at Hope Christian Fellowship, plus many friends.
Bruce was born on June 28, 1953, in Granville, Iowa. He later lived most of his adult life in Cedar Rapids and Robins. Bruce was an accomplished and talented mechanical engineer, as well as a veteran. He was a truly wonderful father and grandfather. He had a love for Harley-Davidsons, a quick wit, played multiple instruments, built anything from houses to PCs and was fond of helping others anonymously.
However, he would tell you, reader, in no uncertain terms, that none of that really matters. He would scoff at any accolades and recognition, and tell you that he was simply a lost man, who was found and saved by the grace of his heavenly Father. He would ask you if you knew his Savior, Jesus, and he would show you clearly how much the love and peace of God meant to him, by his actions. He often spoke of going home to heaven and he would want us to tell you that he's there now, waiting for you.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nancy Shafer (nee Vosburg, nee Penning) and Edwin Penning of Granville, Iowa; as well as his sister, Deborah.
His daughters will be hosting a Celebration of Life At 4 p.m. Sunday, July 30, at Perfect Game, 850 Twixt Town Rd., Cedar Rapids. There will be a brief spoken tribute, with food and drinks to follow. Motorcycle parking up front!
On behalf of Bruce's family and friends, we thank you all for the outpouring of love and support that we have received and assuredly will continue to receive.
