STUDENT ARREST RATE: About 1 of every 10 University of Iowa male students living in residence halls or fraternities were arrested or cited for non-traffic-related crimes during the 2011-12 school year, according to UI records. The good news is that both categories are down from the previous year. Female students' numbers are substantially lower, although 6.7 percent of sorority members were arrested or cited in 2011-12.

VIOLENCE AT CARE FACILITY: The death of resident Kris Simpson after being attacked Sept. 17 by another resident was the latest in a run of criminal offenses at Prairie View Residential Care Facility in Fayette County. In the last five months, three men have been injured and a woman sexually assaulted at the facility.

SHORT SEASON: Iowa's annual fall foliage show is arriving 10 days to two weeks early, and it's likely to be shorter than usual, experts predict - another downside of the extreme drought that continues with no signs of letting up any time soon. Many of our big, mature trees are on the ropes next year if we don't get some substantial moisture by then.
