Frederick B. Charbon, 93, of North Liberty, died Saturday, July 1, 2023, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 7, at Grace United Methodist Church in Tiffin. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 6, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Private family burial services will be at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Tiffin. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in his memory to Tiffin United Methodist Church or the North Liberty Optimist Club, both of which were very dear to his heart. Frederick Benjamin Charbon was born Christmas Day of 1929, the son of Arthur and Louise (Herr) Charbon. Attended schools in this area graduating from University High School with the Class of 1947. He enlisted in the U.S. Army serving during the Korean conflict. On June 3, 1956, he was united in marriage to Marilyn J.. Gritton in Tiffin. The couple have farmed most of their entire married lives. Fred was a man of the earth, his family, his farming, his faith and friends and community were so very important to him. He was one of the longest members of the Grace United Methodist Church, the North Liberty Optimist Club and a member of 4-H for years.
His family includes his wife, Marilyn; their children, Eugene Charbon (Marcia) and Elaine Rayner (Randy); daughter-in-law, Cindy Charbon; eight grandchildren, Mike Charbon (Sarah), Andrew “AJ” Charbon (Cori), Jill Zieser (David), Dawn Davies (Jeremy), Amanda Crane (Sean), Ryan Charbon (Krystal), Gina Zelle (Tara Zelle) and Quinn Rayner (Kiersten Jensen); 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruth Fountain and Carol Foster (Lee).
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; son, Gale; and brother-in-laws, Omer Fountain and Larry Sexton.
