Iowa’s 2024 recruiting class on par with past years following June official visits

IOWA CITY — After a key recruiting weekend, Iowa football’s 2024 recruiting class is beginning to take shape.
The 2024 class has received five commitments from scholarship players since June 22, pushing the class size up to 16. More commitments are likely in the next few weeks as well.
Plenty of fluidity remains with another five-plus months until the early signing period, but Iowa’s 2024 recruiting appears to be on par with previous years.
As of Friday afternoon, Iowa’s 2024 class was 30th in On3’s rankings, 32nd in Rivals’ rankings and 27th in 247Sports’ rankings.
Those numbers put the Hawkeyes in the middle tier of the Big Ten — either eighth, ninth or 10th, depending on one’s preferred recruiting site, when including incoming members USC and UCLA.
While not jumping off the page, those rankings are close to where the Hawkeyes’ previous classes have finished.
On3 has ranked Iowa’s previous five classes 40th, 32nd, 22nd, 33rd and 41st nationally, dating back to 2019.
Iowa’s last five recruiting classes have finished 30th or worse in 247Sports rankings in all but one year. The exception was Iowa’s 2021 class, which rose to 24th.
Rivals has similarly ranked Iowa as high as 23rd and as low as 41st in the five-year span.
That level of recruiting has been sufficient for Iowa, which prides itself as a developmental program, to finish in the final AP Top 25 in four of the last five seasons.
Here’s a position-by-position rundown of Iowa’s commitments so far, along with a few uncommitted prospects to possibly keep an eye on:
Quarterback
Committed: James Resar (Jacksonville, Fla.)
Where recruiting stands: Iowa has its quarterback for 2024. Resar will add some speed and athleticism to Iowa’s quarterback room when he arrives on campus.
Running back
Committed: Brevin Doll (Adel), Xavier Williams (Saint John, Ind.)
Where recruiting stands: Iowa appears to be set at running back after picking up commitments from Doll and Williams, who are both three-star prospects.
Tight end
Committed: Michael Burt (Omaha, Neb.), Gavin Hoffman (Overland Park, Kan.)
Where recruiting stands: Iowa’s tight end class came together quickly after offering Hurt and Hoffman earlier this month. Both are three-star prospects, and both had plenty of interest from other big-name programs.
Wide receiver
Committed: K.J. Parker (Elmhurst, Ill.), Reece Vander Zee (Rock Rapids)
Possible name to watch: Jayquan Reid (Miami)
Where recruiting stands: Iowa picked up its first two wide receiver commitments of the class this week with the additions of Parker and Vander Zee.
Offensive line
Committed: Cody Fox (Winthrop), Josh Janowski (Frankfort, Ill.), William Nolan (Arlington Heights, Ill.), Bodey McCaslin (St. Charles, Ill.)
Where recruiting stands: After an early commitment from Fox, a four-star prospect, Iowa has picked up three three-star prospects from the Chicago suburbs.
Defensive line
Committed: Devan Kennedy (Phoenix), Drew Campbell (Cedar Falls)
Possible name to watch: Chima Chineke (Plano, Texas)
Where recruiting stands: With two three-star commitments so far, Iowa has still has some room to add on the defensive line.
Linebacker
Committed: Preston Ries (Monticello), Derek Weisskopf (Williamsburg), Cam Buffington (Winfield)
Where recruiting stands: The Hawkeyes have a trio of talented in-state prospects at this position and are likely set for 2024.
Defensive back
Committed: Graham Eben (Rock Rapids) (walk-on)
Possible name to watch: Jaylen Watson (Toledo, Ohio)
Where recruiting stands: Barring a position change from any of the aforementioned commits, defensive back is one of the bigger remaining needs for the Hawkeyes’ 2024 class.
