It’s been an eclectic affair since The Revivalists formed in 2007.
“Pour It Out Into the Night,” the latest album from the New Orleans-based band and first since 2018’s “Take Good Care,” is varied as usual. The folk-rock of “Down in the Dirt,” the muscular guitar-driven “When I Got You” and the touching piano ballad “Say Goodbye” happily co-exist on the band’s fifth album.
“That's normal to us,” drummer Andrew Campanelli said while calling from his New Orleans home. “It’s just how we operate. We have no problem going from an Americana song to a big rock ballad. It goes back to when this band was formed. We never wanted limits to be placed on what we can do creatively. Anything can come out of this band.”
That’s been so for five albums and a pair of EPs for The Revivalists, who will co-headline Monday at the McGrath Amphitheatre in Cedar Rapids with The Head and the Heart.

“We're comfortable the way we are,” Campanelli said. “We know what we do best, which is to serve the song. We don’t worry about what we’re doing stylistically.”
Rich Costey (Muse, Death Cab for Cutie) co-produced the album with The Revivalists. It’s the band’s most powerful album to date.
“I’m really pleased with the production,” Campanelli said. “I love the sound and the tones. In some ways, it’s really different than what we’ve done on prior records. It isn’t as Southern soul as we’ve been in the past. It’s more rock and the new songs are so much fun to play.”
The Revivalists — which also includes vocalist/lyricist David Shaw, guitarist Zach Feinberg, guitarist Ed Williams, saxophonist Rob Ingraham, bassist George Gekas, keyboardist Michael Giradot and percussionist P.J. Howard — crafts old-school albums with songs veering in different directions but held together by a common denominator.
“There’s room for that even in this age of albums with a single and a number of songs that sound just like that single,” Campanelli said. “We're not trying to write hits. We make records that rise and fall. We bring listeners on a journey with our albums and that’s also how it goes for us when we perform live.”
The Revivalists is also old-school since the group lives in the moment and engages the fans. The unpredictable act also slips in some deep cuts.
“The fans want to hear those songs that aren’t played so often and we have fun playing them,” Campanelli said. “We’ll obviously be playing the songs from ‘Pour It Out Into the Night.’ but we play songs from all of our records. It’s a pretty balanced evening. This band has been playing live for 17 years. We know what we need to do to satisfy the audience and ourselves.”
The members of the band grew up watching the masters of live entertainment deliver on the stages in the Big Easy.
“Some of the greatest musicians have come out of New Orleans,” Campanelli said. “I came of age watching bands from all styles in our city. I was impacted by jazz bands like The Rebirth Brass Band and the incredible (funk jam band) Dumpstaphunk. I would watch those bands perform and I saw the air in the rooms they played turn into electricity.
It’s a high standard, but it’s a standard we try to match every time we take the stage.“
The Rolling Stones, whose members are very particular about who they add to open shows, tabbed The Revivalists as support for a few dates of its “No Regrets” tour.
“It doesn’t get much cooler than playing on a bill with the Stones,” Campanelli said. “We’ve had a lot of highlights as a band, but the greatest thing is maybe that we still enjoy what we do all these years after this band formed.
