Helen M. Hixson was born on July 3, 1933, in Waterloo, Iowa. She passed at the age of 89 on June 13, 2023, at Oldorf Hospice House. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 21, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories.
Helen graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1951 and married the love of her life, Keith, on Nov. 23, 1951. They made their home in Waterloo and had four children before moving to Cedar Rapids. Once all the kids were in school, Helen fulfilled her dream of attending nursing school. She began her nursing career as an LPN, returned to school to become an RN and worked at St. Luke’s Hospital on the post-surgical floor. After several years working, she returned to school once again to become an “ET” (enterostomal therapy and wound care nurse) and worked at both St. Luke’s and Mercy hospitals and made occasional house calls. She was a very caring, compassionate nurse. She retired in 1991.
After retirement, she kept busy with several hobbies including quilting, cooking, gardening, traveling and volunteering at Indian Creek Nature Center. She also became a master gardener and a member of the Eastern Iowa Heirloom Quilters. Through it all her husband, Keith, and her family were most important to her. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Helen is survived by her four children, Lee (Janet) Hixson of Cedar Rapids, Karen Schreiber of Boone, Iowa, Kathleen (Randy) Wymore of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Craig Hixson of Trinidad, Colo.; five grandchildren, Tess (Mike) Sellers, Jacqueline (Josh) Woodbridge, Miranda Wymore, Ryan (Jess) Hixson and Keith Schreiber; and two great-grandchildren, Melanie and Trevor Sellers. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 70 years, Keith.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mercy Foundation. Online condolences may be directed to the family at www.cedarmemorial.com under Obituaries.
