Byron L. “Pock” Rhodes, 89, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at UnityPoint-St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Per his wishes he was cremated. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
Byron L. “Pock” Rhodes was born Sept. 3, 1933, the son of Leroy and Edith Rhodes. After graduating high school, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa. Byron proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On Nov. 18, 1967, he was united in marriage to Mar Joan Park. Byron retired from Square D as a Systems Analyst.
Byron enjoyed golfing, feeding his backyard critters, and was an avid Hawkeyes fan. He was a part of The Old Men's Club that wrote and published a book, by the same name, with a group of his lifelong friends. Byron’s great joy came from spending time with his family and friends. He was a kind and helpful neighbor and supported several charitable organizations. Byron will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mar Joan; four children, Roger (Trish) Zahradnik, Barb (Tom) Klein, Mindy (Tim) Tighe and Thad Rhodes; seven grandchildren, Anthony, Nicole, Sarah, Dustin, Nathan, Stephanie and Kayla; 14 great-grandchildren, and many loving extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two siblings, Rawlins Rhodes and Dottie Morris.
The family requests in lieu flowers, donations be sent to Cedar Valley Humane Society or Veterans organization of your choice.
