NORTH LIBERTY — Aldi is preparing to build a new location in North Liberty, according to a commercial building permit filed this month.
The store’s address will be 725 N Highway 965, which is just north of the intersection with West Penn Street.
The June 2 permit, which is pending approval, requests a “new ground-up ALDI retail store” with a construction value of $4 million. The location will be next to the Leaderboard Sports Bar and across the street from Jimmy John’s, McDonald’s and Walgreens.
The next step after the building permit is approved would be construction plan approval, which would authorize construction, according to the city.
The North Liberty City Council at its Tuesday evening meeting will consider approving a commercial site plan for the 20,664-square-foot location on 4.54 acres of land. The city’s planning commission unanimously recommends approval, as does city staff.
Aldi did not answer The Gazette’s questions about when construction is anticipated to start, what the anticipated opening date for the store is or how many jobs this will create for the area.
Heather McCarthy, Aldi divisional vice president, said in an emailed statement: “Thank you for your interest in ALDI. At this time, we do not have any information to share regarding a future North Liberty, IA location. Should information on future developments become available, we'll be sure to follow-up.”
An Aldi news release from earlier this year said the company is adding 120 new stores this year for more than 2,400 stores nationwide by the end of 2023. The company will add nearly 2,000 employees to support the additional stores.
There are 37 Aldi locations in Iowa, including one in Coralville, one in Iowa City, three in Cedar Rapids and one in Marion.
