Michael “Mike” John Neville Sr., 72, of Anamosa, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, June 4, 2023, following a fight with cancer. He was cared for and surrounded by his children and loving wife in his home.
Mass will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Private burial services will be held at a later date. We will celebrate Mike’s life with a reception at Fawn Creek Country Club from noon to 4 p.m.
Michael John Neville Sr. was born to Maurice and Mary Neville, on Jan. 24, 1951, and remained a lifetime resident of Anamosa. He graduated from Anamosa High School in 1969 then attended The University of Iowa and Loras College. Mike married his wife, Michele (Breon), at St. Patrick’s Church in 1973 where he was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus. He spent his career and retired from the Anamosa State Penitentiary after 34 years of service. Mike was an avid golfer and active member of both Wapsipinicon & Fawn Creek Country Clubs. The highlight of his week was meeting his friends and family for golf. Mike always put his family first and would take on any project for them: from remodeling basements, rebuilding porches, to building his own home. There was nothing he couldn’t do. His favorite times were hosting family events and holidays with the best food, cold beer and stories. Meals were typically delayed by Mike’s jokes and anecdotes. He was a skilled and natural conversationalist, and even got total strangers talking about almost anything. Wherever he was, he enjoyed supporting small local watering holes and connecting with the locals. Mike and Michele were snowbirds and found a love for Panama City Beach, FL, appreciating the weather and live music. All of their children and grandchildren followed them there for spring breaks and made great memories with Papa. He also had many memorable fishing trips to “The Cabin” in Eagle River, Wis.
Mike’s smile, laugh, stories and sense of humor will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
Mike is survived and missed by his wife, Michele (Breon) of 50 years; his four children, Tammy (Brett) Seeley of Anamosa, Michael (Corrine) Neville of Solon, Brian (Kate) Neville of Anamosa and Katie Neville (Brett) of Martelle; three sisters, Bonnie (Kawal) Singh of Iowa City, Peggy Platner (Bob) of Marion and Pat Neville of Anamosa; grandchildren, Sarah, Tim, Logan, Chandler, Ryan, Jake, Addison, Hazel, Maeve, Keegan and Kadence; great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Hudson; in-laws, Dale and Rose Breon, Renee (Randy) Smith, Denise Breon and Stacy Breon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Mary Neville; sister, Nancy Yeakel; and nephew, Brenton Platner.
The Neville Family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses that cared for our father throughout his illness; Dr. Kevin Carpenter of PCI; the team at Jones Regional Medical Center; Dr. Carryn Anderson and Dr. Douglas Laux of UIHC. And a special thanks to the hospice care providers from Above and Beyond.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Anamosa Fidelity Bank, attention Wapsi Country Club Junior Golf.
