Lenore Margaret (Crew) Cullman
Long Beach, Calif.
Lenore Cullman passed away in Long Beach, Calif., on May 27, 2023. She was born in Martelle, Iowa, on March 29, 1924, to Calvin and Bertha Crew. She was a lifelong learner with a passion for the arts, science, traveling and helping others.
A talented soprano, she went to
Chicago after graduating from high school in Vinton, Iowa, to study voice, with the goal of a career in opera. Unfortunately, a chronic lung disease made it impossible to pursue such a rigorous discipline. Undaunted, she returned to Iowa
and enrolled in Coe College in Cedar
Rapids and earned a music degree in 1947.
While continuing to sing as often as possible, her desire to help others inspired her to become a registered nurse. In 1950 she graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids. On June 28 of that same year, she married fellow Coe College graduate Louis Cullman. In 1953 they headed west to Colorado, then on to Long Beach, California, where they settled with their three children in 1964. Throughout their many moves, she continued to pursue what would become a nearly 50-year career in nursing and healthcare administration. Always striving to grow in her field, she completed two graduate degrees at California State University, Long Beach: an M.S. in Nursing (1973) and an M.S. in Healthcare Administration (1982).
Even with a busy family life and heavy workload, she found time to be involved with the local chapter of the national education organization, P.E.O., and Los Altos United Methodist Church. During her 56 years at the church, she sang in the choir, served on the Fine Arts Committee, coordinated free public health fairs, chaired the Caring/Health Ministries Committee, and served as a Parish Nurse and Parish Visitor.
Lenore was preceded in death by her husband and is survived by her children, Sally Cullman, Chip Cullman (Heather) and Lori Morton (Rich); her grandchildren, Zach Morton (Jen Long) and Matt Morton (Haley); numerous nieces and nephews; and her many friends, neighbors and work colleagues who loved, inspired and supported her.
