Rhetoric showa we’ve lost the vision of common good

I found 3 stories in the May 30 edition of The Gazette. For me, it was one of the more interesting editions yet. First, there was excellent coverage of the Memorial Day ceremonies with a great picture of the American Legion Post 436 at the Fairview Cemetery. They were recognizing the supreme sacrifice made by many for our way of life.
The second story was about the return the remains of Pfc. Luther Herschel, Medal of Honor winner, to Georgia after 73 years. He stayed behind while the rest escaped to “safety.” This boy was 18 years old, yet he was concerned with others. Amazing at that age.
The third story involved tenured faculty at universities in Iowa. In the article Steve Holt (R) from Denison expressed anger at liberals using words such a free speech being attacked in Iowa universities. His comments were derogatory, and the same type of borderline divisiveness intended to divide Iowans. I encourage you to read the state legislature website and read his comments about other human beings after passage of the anti-transgender law he supported. His revision of history is unacceptable.
In conclusion, the rhetoric used by Holt and others is an insult to those who have or are presently fighting for equality and country. My wife said it best when she said, “We have lost the vision of common good.” She hates politics, but dang, she is so right. PFC Herschel and the Legion Post 436 are shining examples of that good vision.
