Mary Ellen (Morehead) (Morgan) Squires, 101, of Center Point, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, May 30, 2023. Private family funeral services will be held. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Center Point is assisting the family.
Mary was born on Jan. 21, 1922, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was the daughter of Victor and Gertrude
(Kimball) Morehead. Mary
was the oldest of six children. Her father was a railroad engineer. They
lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. On Dec. 22, 1939, she married Lawrence Morgan. Together they farmed in Center Point, Iowa, where they raised three children. They were close to their neighbors, raising children, playing cards and working together. Mary was one of the founding members of The West Side Country Club. She made friends wherever she went. Mary was always busy in the summer with her large garden, fruit trees and picking wild berries. She had a little cherry tree that made the best cherry pie bars, which she would make for every Fourth of July picnic.
After Lawrence passed away in 1978, Mary enrolled in a community art class. It is there that she discovered her inherited artistic abilities from her father. The group enjoyed being together so much that they continued to get together every week and formed the art group, The Gabbers and Dabbers. They would have a once-a-year showing of their artwork. Mary enjoyed working with oils and watercolors.
In November of 1982, she united in marriage to Melvin Squires. They enjoyed being with their families, golfing, traveling, and going to dances. After his passing, Mary moved into the town of Center Point. She was a very active member of the United Methodist Church and was in many church groups through the years. In 2005, she moved to The Village Place in Marion, Iowa, where she enjoyed meeting new friends. Then, she moved to Pennington Square in Monticello, Iowa, to be closer to her daughter, Jacky. After being diagnosed with only six months to live after a recurrence of her breast cancer, she lived five more years. Her family will remember her lovingly for being a kind, giving and gentle soul.
Mary is survived and lovingly remembered by her three children, Jerry (Linda) Morgan of Dubuque, Iowa, Irene (Emery) Hines of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Jacquelyn (Lee) Hein of Monticello, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both of her husbands; four brothers, Byron, John, William and Richard Morehead; sister, Rose Davis; two grandsons, David J. Hines and Jerry Paul Morgan Jr.; great-grandson, Timothy Osborn; sister-in-law, Bernadene Nelson; and brother-in-law, Melvin Morgan.
