IOWA CITY -- Each month, the Iowa City Public Library’s will feature a comic or graphic novel for kids, suggest a sweet treat pairing, include a game or activity, and ask a couple discussion questions about the book.
In Wings of Fire #1: The Dragonet Prophecy by Tui Sutherland, a secret movement called the Talons of Peace is determined to end a generations-long war among the seven dragon tribes.
The secret movement draws on a prophecy that calls for a great sacrifice, compelling five appointed dragonets to fulfill a painful destiny against their will.
Pairs well with: Dragon Flame Meringue Cookies from Alison's Wonderland Recipes! Use a piping bag to create delicate orange flames reminiscent of a dragon's breath.

Discuss
Clay is loyal, Starflight is smart, Tsunami is a protector, Sunny is an optimist, and Glory is a gentle beauty. Which dragonet is most similar to you and why?
Clay believes that he is not a “naturally hatched hero.” What makes him feel that he does not meet expectations? Have you ever felt that you did not meet expectations? Were you able to overcome those feelings?
How do you feel about the ending of the book? Do you think the sacrifice was worth it? Does it make you want to read the rest of the series?
Try
Make a dragon egg! Start with a ball of foil about the size of a golf ball as the "core." Then build up air-dry clay around the core until you have an egg shape. Decorate the egg with rhinestones, sequins, tiny shells, beads and other decorations. Let dry overnight.
