Different welcome for yesterday’s soldiers

More than 90 members of the 209th Medical Company of the Iowa Army National Guard were welcomed home in a ceremony May 12 at the ImOn Ice Arena in Cedar Rapids; complete with flag waving, pomp, and brass bands. Their arrival was front page news in The Gazette the following day, and among the attendees were the mayor and the governor.
It was a far cry from the “ceremonies” their Army predecessors (many of whom were bombed and shot at) received a half century ago; when they were “welcomed” home by no dignitaries or media; but rather by protesters at the Greyhound bus depot on 2nd St. SE hurling profanities.
