CPU’s Sydney Maue: A ‘self-taught’ silver medalist in 3A girls’ state track high jump
Solon gets on the board with runner-up finish in 3,200-meter relay

May. 18, 2023 8:57 pm
DES MOINES — Sydney Maue is a self-described, “self-taught” high jumper.
“We don’t have a jumps coach,” said Maue, a sophomore at Center Point-Urbana. “We’re supposed to get one next year. Hopefully that can help me get an inch or two higher.”
Another inch or two, and ... well, that would have made a big difference Thursday afternoon.
Maue cleared 5 feet, 6 inches and earned Class 3A runner-up girls’ honors at the state track and field meet Thursday afternoon at Drake Stadium.
“I’m a little disappointed,” she said. “I was hoping to win.”
London Warmuth of Adel ADM won the event at 5-7. After Maue missed twice at 5-7, someone in Maue’s camp elected to put the bar at 5-8 for her last attempt.
She narrowly missed.
Warmuth’s victory helped propel ADM to the team lead after the first day. The Tigers have 23 points. Defending-champion Solon is second with 17, followed by Pella (15).
Maue had a sporadic early part to the season: “I cleared 5-2 in one of my first meets, then it was 4-8, then 4-6,” she said. “After that, my confidence went up, and I was fourth at (the) Drake (Relays).
“This is what I do. I’m not a sprinter. I’m not super buff. This is my thing.”
Solon, Mount Vernon go 2-3 in the 3,200 relay
Solon got on the board with a second-place finish in the 3,200-meter relay. The Spartans ran in 9:39.11; Gilbert won it in 9:29.11.
State swimming champion Grace Hoeper ran the second leg for the Spartans.
“I’ve been running a lot as well as swimming,” she said. “As hard as these other girls are running, I’ve got to do my best in both.”
Mount Vernon was third in the 3,200 relay, and Libby Dix was third in the discus.
Dix said she tweaked her back early this week, so she tempered her expectations — until Thursday.
“I felt that I had a shot,” she said. “And (Wednesday), I would have taken third but today, it just wasn't quite what I had hoped.”
After the runner-up relay finish, Federspiel was third in the 400, in 57.28 seconds.
“I wasn’t necessary prepared for the quickness (between events),” she said. “But I can’t control that, or the other people. I can just do my best.
“I gave it my all, but sometimes it’s not there. But I got a season-best.”
Carlee Webber of Marion was fourth in the high jump; Julia Alberts of Decorah was fourth in the discus.
