Violet was born on Aug. 24, 1928, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of William and Emilie Stumpff. Vi graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1946 where she met the love of her life, George.
Vi and George were united in marriage on June 17, 1950. They were married for 30 years until George’s passing in 1980. Together, they raised three children. Vi was a homemaker until her children were in school. She then became a secretary at Area 10 Community College, which later became Kirkwood Community College. She retired after 25 years. Vi was a lifetime member and volunteer at First Lutheran Church.
Vi grew up a tomboy and loved anything sports-related. She had a passion for watching the Cubs, golf, and anything to do with Hawkeye sports. One of her favorite things to do was attend all her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events and activities, often recording statistics for each game. Vi was so very proud of her children, grandchildren, and later her great-grandchildren. She was a crafty lady and enjoyed sewing and calligraphy, among other hobbies.
Vi is survived by her three children, Thomas and his wife Deb Schamberger of Hiawatha, Steven and his wife Dawn Schamberger of Marion, and Patricia Rooney and her husband Randy of Cedar Rapids. Grandchildren include Josh (Jessica) Schamberger, Jason (Kristi) Schamberger, Jeff Schamberger, Ben (Lynston) Schamberger, Curt Schamberger, Jordan (Shawna) Schamberger, Stefanie (Ryan) Bender, Laura (Ben) Sampson, Kristen Rooney, Baili (Kellen) Sweeney, and Michael (Jill) Rooney; 20 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and her lifelong friend Pat Thompson.
She was preceded in death by her husband George, great-grandson Beau Bender, several nieces, and her siblings Hank, Ray, Jo, Harley, Pep, and Virginia.
