Thank you for your April 28 editorial, “Bird’s pause is a cruel policy.” You noted "No comment from the attorney general."
I contacted and received a response from the AG's office on April 26 on this same issue. The response follows:
“We appreciate the opportunity to read and discuss your concerns with the Attorney General’s top deputies.
“At this point in time, there has been no policy change. The office‘s previous practice of paying for Plan B and abortion for victims is just under an audit to determine whether this is an appropriate use of public funds. No decision has been made.
“This review is not about whether victims should have access to Plan B or abortion, but if the state should be paying for it.
“This is part of our larger audit of victim services, which has been ongoing since our office's recent transition of leadership, to ensure that the system works for victims, not against them. This is also to make certain we are doing everything properly and according to Iowa code.
“Please keep up to date with our office by going to our website https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov”
