A national effort to collect unused prescription drugs — which may fall into the wrong hands if left lying around the house — will come to police stations, retailers and pharmacies between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday in Iowa.
During the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency’s Drug Take Back Day last year, people dropped off 720,000 pounds of unneeded medications at 5,144 collection sites across the nation, the agency reported.
Some law enforcement agencies will set up drop-off sites in their parking lots or headquarters, while others will partner with pharmacies, retailers or others to set up locations. An interactive list of locations near you can be found at deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback.
Some of the locations in the Corridor include:
- Cedar Rapids Police Department lobby, 505 First St. SW in Cedar Rapids.
- Linn County Sheriff’s Office west parking lot, 310 Second Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids, or — until 1 p.m. — at the Springville Fire Station, 300 Broadway St.
- Johnson County Sheriff's Office, 511 S Capitol St., Iowa City.
- Johnson County residents may also drop off unused prescriptions drugs and needles under a program run by the Iowa City Police Department and the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center. The location is at the East Side Recycling Center, 2401 Scott Blvd. SE in Iowa City. Needles must in sealed, sturdy plastic containers like laundry detergent bottles. Needles in thinner plastic bottles like milk jugs, plastic bags or cardboard boxes will not be accepted.
No questions will be asked of people dropping off the unused drugs. Pharmaceuticals should be either in their original containers with names blacked out, or in plastic baggies with no personal patient information.
