CEDAR RAPIDS — Plans to detour traffic for much of the day Friday from the First Avenue Bridge have been canceled — for now.
The city of Cedar Rapids had planned to test a new floodgate installed near First Street E, by City Hall. Doing so would have closed the bridge for eight hours starting at 8 a.m.
But Thursday, the city canceled the test because of the weather forecast. The test and detour will be rescheduled for a later date.
The floodgate is 12 feet high and 6 feet thick and is designed to be rolled across the street in the event of a flood as part of the city’s permanent flood protection system. The city currently is installing another gate on the west bank on the Cedar River on the First Avenue Bridge.
