Jane Barnts, 85, of Monticello, died Monday, April 17, 2023, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a sudden illness, with her family by her side.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, April 21, 2023, at the First Presbyterian Church, Monticello, with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery. Larry Lamont will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 4 until 7 p.m. Thursday at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello.
Surviving are two children, Kathy (Tom) Luensman and Kirk (Tina) Barnts; his grandchildren, Sara, Jeff (Bailey) and Jason Luensman and Felicia Keirfer, Janeane Barnts and Michaela (Kameren Goodall) Barnts; great-grandchildren, Emee and Landon, Aliyah, Rbriella, Klaryssa and Madelyn; her sister, Barb Salser; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Herb; an infant son, Gary Dean; a son, Michael in 2000; her brothers, Lynn, Doug, Delbert, Bill and Jim Simmons; and her sister, Rose Mardorf.
Jane Amelia May Simmons was born Nov. 30, 1937, in Jones County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Wilbur and Etta Chapman, Simmons. She received her early education in the Olin Schools and graduated from the Monticello Community Schools with the Class of 1956. Jane Simmons married Herb Barnts on Dec. 23, 1957, at the First Presbyterian Church, Monticello. Over the years Jane was employed at Schultz Brothers Dime Store, Hardee’s, Dollar General, and cleaning jobs at Orbis, Energy and Commander Buildings. She also helped at the Best Western Longbranch and Americ Inn in Anamosa.
Never one to sit still, Jane was always busy. Her greatest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed her Friday lunches at Diamond Pi and spending hours on the phone with friends.
