Moustafa Tiea’s come-from-behind 1:53 split triggers Iowa City West’s 4x800
Boys’ track and field: Trojans’ sophomore follows with a winning 400; Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Cedar Rapids Prairie share the John Ask Relays title

CEDAR RAPIDS — Moustafa Tiea takes a long-distance mentality into middle-distance competition.
Exhibit A: No starting blocks in the 400-meter dash.
“I don’t want to creep into sprinters’ territory,” said the sophomore at Iowa City West.
Exhibit B: The concept of pacing himself, regardless of race distance.
“Rule No. 1 that I go by ... I’m always required to have something in reserve,” he said. “I’m going to be unprotected without something left in the tank.”
Tiea was the star of the John Ask Relays boys’ track and field meet Tuesday night at Kingston Stadium.
First, he brought the Trojans from behind in the 3,200-meter relay, anchoring in 1:53.0. Then he followed with a winning 50.73-second effort in the 400.
“I’m very happy (with the 4x800 anchor split),” Tiea said. “I was pretty consistent at 1:58, and I was expecting a time drop tonight. But not that much.”
West was in third place in the 3,200 relay when Tiea got the baton. By the time he finished, the Trojans were more than 5 seconds clear of the rest of the field.
“I wanted to be in first place before the second lap, then I wanted to open it up from there so nobody could come back,” he said. “I’m not fond of the second lap. I don’t like to think about it.”
Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Cedar Rapids Prairie tied for the team title in the eight-team competition, with 146 points apiece. Western Dubuque was third with 118, followed by Linn-Mar (108).
Kennedy won four events, Prairie three.
Ranked third statewide (all classes) in the shuttle hurdle relay, Kennedy outran No. 1 Linn-Mar on this day. The Cougars’ unit of Tyler Bartels, Cyrus Courtney, Ryan Bartels and Landen Dougherty ran in 59.54 seconds; the Lions finished in 1:00.05.
Kennedy also won the sprint medley, Pierce McCrary cleared 6 feet in the high jump and Miles Wilson claimed the 1,600-meter title in 4:24.43.
Prairie’s winners were Tate Joens in the discus (150-1), Sam Asiedu-Okyere in the 200 (23.12) and the 1,600-meter relay.
Cedar Rapids Washington’s Miles Thompson and Michael Blank ran 1-2 in the 100, then teamed up in the Warriors’ 42.72-second effort in the 400 relay.
