There were those in our midst who dreamed of Lauren Betts coming to Iowa. The dream is over, and it won’t be fulfilled.
Betts, a 6-foot-7 five-star women’s basketball recruit out of Centennial, Colo., spent a year at Stanford and then entered the NCAA’s transfer portal. Some suggested she might entertain coming to Iowa, given that the Hawkeyes have a need for a center and Betts was ranked the No. 1 prep recruit in the nation in the 2022 class.
Betts played high school ball with current Iowa center Addison O’Grady, and was a teammate of Caitlin Clark’s on the USA’s U19 team that won the gold medal in the 2021 FIBA World Cup.
But Tuesday, Betts announced on Instagram that she was headed to UCLA.
So, Iowa still has a presumed vacancy at center to replace WNBA-bound Monika Czinano and be the recipient of countless post feeds from Clark.
