CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids man was arrested Wednesday after police say he stabbed his ex-girlfriend multiple times and hit her with the claw side of a hammer.
Jimmy Prophete, 41, is charged with attempted murder, willful injury resulting in serious injury, going armed with intent and domestic abuse assault.
Police responded to the 5800 block of Pheasant Drive SW, Cedar Rapids, at about 3 a.m. Thursday and found the woman, Jasmine Charles, suffering from several stab wounds and blunt force trauma to the head, according to a news release from the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
Charles was taken to the hospital and her injuries, which included a swollen face, several lacerations to her neck and face and a large lump on her forehead, were determined to be non-life threatening, according to the release and a criminal complaint.
The complaint states that Prophete pounded on Charles’ door and chased her when she fled from her apartment. He pinned her down, pulled a knife out of his jacket and stabbed her three times, then hit her multiple times in the head and neck with the claw side of a hammer, that he also had with him. At one point he reportedly told her “You’re done,” or “I’m done with you.”
A no-contact order between Prophete and Charles was already in place at the time of the attack because of an ongoing criminal domestic abuse case in which Prophete is accused of cutting Charles with a piece of broken glass on March 19.
Prophete had already left the scene when police arrived, but was arrested with the help of the Marshalltown Police Department after an investigation. He is being held in the Linn County Correctional Center, according to the news release.
