Gerald John “Jerry” Masanz, 73, of Coralville, passed away Thursday, April 6, 2023, at Lantern Park Specialty Care. Military honors will be accorded by local American Legions at 11 a.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. A gathering will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made by Friends of the Animal Center Foundation or Care Initiatives Hospice.
Jerry was born on March 1, 1950, in Mashfield, Wis., to Mark and Dori (Larsen) Masanz, and grew up in West Branch, Iowa. He graduated from West Branch High School and received his associate's degree from Kirkwood Community College. Jerry was a sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1970-76. He worked for DNA Engineering in Pheonix, Ariz., from 1988-91, and then moved back to Iowa City. Jerry then worked for MMS Consultant from 1991-2001, retiring from Snyder and Associates. He enjoyed hunting and woodworking.
Jerry is survived by his children, Jeff Masanz of Cooper City, Fla., and Shona Masanz of Coralville; two grandchildren, Ashley and Dylan Masanz; and two sisters, Bonnie Neff of Iowa City, Iowa, and Debbie (Mike) Popelka, all of Kalona, Iowa.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parent; brother, Marvin Masanz; and friend, Lynn Akers.
