John Michael Gallagher, 92, of Cedar Rapids died following a short illness with dementia on Sunday, April 2, 2023. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at St. Patrick Catholic Church by Rev. Dennis Miller. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A vigil will be held at 4 p.m., Wednesday at Teahen Funeral Home. Those not attending the vigil service may visit with the family from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, or on Thursday after 9 a.m. at the church.
John is survived by his daughter, Mary Rocarek of Glen Flora, Wis.; three sons, Mike (Deb) Gallagher of Cedar Rapids, Jim (Julie) Gallagher of Hiawatha and Bob Gallagher of St. Louis, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Michelle, Matthew, Haley, Wendy, Larry Jr., Steve and Scott; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Ramona; daughter, Linda Kay Gallagher; and son-in-law, Larry Rocarek.
John was born on April 2, 1931, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Patrick and Marie Burke Gallagher. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1949. John served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He married Ramona Porter on June 26, 1952, in Cedar Rapids. John worked as a machinist at Link-Belt/FMC and part time for the city of Cedar Rapids for many years. John was the recipient of the Cedar Rapids Southside Civic Award in 1958 and was inducted into the Cedar Rapids Softball Hall of Fame in 1987.
John loved sports and was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa Hawkeyes. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing and hunting, and liked to sing karaoke and study genealogy. John was member of St. Patrick Catholic Church his whole life and he could be found always sitting in the same pew. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge #304.
