Leon Young, 91, passed away peacefully at Compass Memorial Healthcare in Marengo on Wednesday, April 5, 2023.
Visitation will be Friday, April 7, 2023, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home in Blairstown. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 8, 2023, at the Blairstown Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Diane Vorhies officiating. Interment will be held at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Blairstown.
Leon was born on Jan. 29, 1932, in Belle Plaine, the son of Vernon and Neta (Cronbaugh) Young. He graduated from Blairstown High School, with the Class of 1950. Leon served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. On July 21, 1957, he was united in marriage to Barbara Kemper in Cedar Rapids.
Leon was a carpenter and general contractor all his working life. He owned and operated Young Industries in Blairstown, along with his son Steve. He was a man of quiet faith who taught Sunday School for many years. Leon coached little league baseball in his younger years. He earned his private pilot’s license and soloed at the age of 70. Leon very much enjoyed the Honor Flight he took with his son Steve to Washington D.C. in 2017. He was active in his community as a member of the M.J. Kirby Post #170 of the American Legion and the Blairstown Lions Club.
Leon is survived by his wife, Barbara; his children, Steve (Mary Lou) Young of Blairstown, Lisa (Tim) Fontinel of Victor; eight grandchildren, Amy (Tom) Schulte, Dan Young, Sara Brenenkampf, Jamie (Nate) Berg, Austin (Clairelise) Young, Dustin (Beth) Bramstedt, Tabby (Shawn) Hoyt and Tisha Fontinel; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Tim Young; sister, Marvelyn McGrath; and his grandson.
