Richard “Dick” R. Hover, 88, of Cedar Rapids passed away peacefully on Friday, March 24, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Memorial services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m., with a visitation starting at 9:30 a.m., at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Marion, Iowa. A luncheon will be held at the church.
Richard Ralph Hover was born on Nov. 16, 1934, to Ralph and Mildred Hover in Davenport, Iowa. He graduated from Davenport High School in 1952 and then joined the U.S. Navy shortly after. He proudly served during the Korean Conflict on the USS Los Angeles. He met the love of his life in San Francisco. They were united in marriage on June 29, 1957 ,in San Francisco, Calif. They were happily married for 65 years.
Richard worked for NCR for 29 years as a salesman and retired in 1994.
He was very musical and had the opportunity to play the string bass with Dave Brubeck in San Francisco. Along with playing the string bass, he also played the tuba and the guitar. Richard was an avid golfer and loved cooking (known for his amazing BBQ ribs). Dick was a hot air balloonist. He was a fan of the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes, and the 49ers.
Left to cherish Dick’s memory is his loving wife, Donna; his daughters, Julie (Bob) Madison and Kelly (Eric) Heinemann; his grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew, Benjamin, Tanner, Quinn, Katie and Ethan; his great-grandchildren, Jade, Savannah, Evelyn, and Eleanor; sisters-in-law, Betty McCroskey and Kathy Valdivia; brother-in-law, Jim Fletcher; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Janet Fletcher.
