I knew at a young age that this community was where I wanted to work and live. Coralville is a special place that offers a small-town feel while supporting a vibrant economy.

I grew up on a farm about 60 miles south of Coralville and attended law and business school at the University of Iowa. I worked hard early in my career to establish a productive legal practice. In 2006, my firm opened an office in Coralville.

I have been contemplating running for City Council for a few years, and when Mayor Jim Fausett decided not to rerun, I jumped at the opportunity to become Coralville's next mayor. I respect the legacy of those who have served in the past but I want to be part of the next generation of leadership and facilitate even greater prosperity.

I want our community to be one where citizens feel welcome to be engaged in local government and the political process. I have been humbled by the support I have received from citizens across the political spectrum.

As mayor, I would plan to create an environment that facilitates open discussion and debate so that the City Council has the information it needs to make good decisions. Both the majority and minority need to be heard and their ideas considered even if they do not conform to the usual way of thinking. Citizens are concerned about the City's debt. Coralville has experienced rapid and successful growth in the past 10 years. The challenge now is to build on that success without exposing our City to unnecessary risks. It is hard to deny there is a debt problem when independent credit analysts continue to decrease Coralville's bond rating. I would support a moratorium on new debt until we see an increase in our bond rating.

In addition, I would work to clearly articulate a debt repayment plan to regain the confidence of citizens and bond investors. We also must not lose sight of providing essential city services.

Finally, our city government does not operate on an island. Our decisions affect our schools, surrounding communities and our shared future. As mayor, I will ensure Coralville has a steady voice in the planning discussions of the Iowa City Community School District. I will actively communicate with other local governments and be as efficient as possible with our collective resources.
