DES MOINES - It wasn’t overwhelming, but it was a win, and that’s the thing at the state tournament.
Frankie Chiodo and Josh Sanderson scored 14 points each as top-ranked and top-seeded Grand View Christian pushed past New London, 61-51, in a Class 1A quarterfinal Monday morning at Wells Fargo Arena.
New London (19-7) had a 12-10 lead after the first quarter, with Grand View (25-0) assuming a 25-22 edge at halftime. GVC outscored New London by 10 points in the third quarter to pull away.
Emiliano Barrantes added 13 points and 7-footer Daniel Tobiloba 10 points, 13 rebounds and six blocked shots for GVC. Blaise Porter had 15 points and Kade Benjamin 14 for New London.
WEST HARRISON 87, DUNKERTON 61 - Amazing what prior experience at the state tournament can mean.
West Harrison got 27 points and 14 rebounds from Koleson Evans and dominated Dunkerton in a matchup of the four and five seeds in 1A. The Hawkeyes (the fourth seed) played at state for the first time last season, losing a quarterfinal to Remsen St. Mary’s, 70-52.
With much of that same team back, West Harrison (24-1) shot 54 percent from the field and placed all five starters in double-figure scoring. Sage Evans had 11 points and 21 rebounds for the winners, who outboarded Dunkerton (23-2) by a 48-14 margin.
Casey Gardner had 27 points and Preston Gillespie 19 for Dunkerton, whose only other loss this season was to North Linn, which is the second seed at this 1A tournament.
REMSEN ST. MARY’S 57, GLADBROOK-REINBECK 47 - Collin Homan had 17 points, and sixth-seeded St. Mary’s pulled away from a halftime tie to beat third-seeded G-R.
Jaxon Bunkers added 12 points and Cael Ortmann 11 for St. Mary’s (23-2), which plays North Linn in Wednesday night’s semifinals.
William Kiburis had 16 points and Caleb Egesdal 14 for Gladbrook-Reinbeck (23-3).
CENTRAL LYON 74, DES MOINES CHRISTIAN 41 - Number one definitely played like number one. Andrew Austin had 21 points, and Central Lyon scored 25 first-quarter points en route to a rout.
Josh Elbert added 18 points and University of Iowa football recruit Zach Lutmer 17 for the Lions (22-1), who led after three quarters, 66-29. Central Lyon shot 52.8 percent from the field.
Seaton Igram led Des Moines Christian (18-7) with 11 points.
