In equal circumstances, Leffingwell scoring record would prevail

With reference to the Jan. 27 Basketball Notebook: The wiping out of Hugh Leffingwell’s 71-year scoring record at Marion by Brayson Laube:
Hughie (never Hugh) was a freshman in the late 1940s — no freshman would have played for the varsity. In addition, there was no 3-point line. Hughie had a two-handed overhead shot that was darn near indefensible. As an example, in one game, he took 27 shots and made 27 baskets.
Hughie held the state tournament free throw record for many years.
My point is this: If all was equal, the 71-year Leffingwell record would still be intact.
