Funeral Mass will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2023, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, with a visitation one hour prior. Burial: St. John’s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, is assisting the family.
Katie was born June 18, 1934, in Colesburg, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer and Dorothy (Kulper) Bush. She was united in marriage to James “Jim” Miller on Nov. 24, 1955, in Ely. Jim and Katie were exceptional members of their community, volunteering for various events and always giving back. Katie worked many years at Quaker Oats and enjoyed several years of traveling to many countries after she retired; she always said how glad she was that she travelled while she was able.
Katie volunteered at the Ely Fire Department 4th of July pancake breakfast every year alongside Jim and gave generously to various organizations. Katie loved quilting and sewing and was a member of a quilting guild for many years. She volunteered knitting hats for newborn babies and cancer patients and made pouches for people that relied on walkers for ambulation so they could carry and move their belongings with them from room to room. Katie was very generous with her time, talents, and finances for anyone in need. Her cheery disposition, bright smile and infectious laugh always lit up the room. She was also called “the most lovable woman” by the nurses who took care of her during her time at Meth-Wick Community.
Survivors include her sister, Mary Ann Malecek of Atkins, Iowa; brother, John Bush of Cedar Rapids; sisters-in-law, Marie Miller of Ely, Bette Ann Spencer of Casper, Wyo., and Rose Miller of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Dorothy Bush; husband, Jim Miller; daughter, Rhonda Kay Miller; son, Andrew James “A.J.” “Andy” Miller; and brother, David Bush.
Memorials may be directed to St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, 1224 Fifth St. SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52401, or the Catherine McAuley Center, 1220 Fifth Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403.
