IHSAA releases substate brackets for boys’ basketball in Class 3A and 4A
Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Cedar Rapids Xavier, Marion among those given top seeds

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Iowa High School Athletic Association revealed substate brackets for Class 3A and 4A boys’ basketball late Monday afternoon.
Top substate seeds in 4A include No. 1-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy (19-0), which is in a six-team pod with second-seeded North Scott (15-4), as well as Davenport West, Davenport North, Burlington and Clinton. The top two seeds in each 3A and 4A substate have first-round byes.
Indianola (18-2) and Ames (15-4) the 1-2 seeds in a substate that also includes Linn-Mar (7-12) and Iowa City Liberty (8-11). Linn-Mar and Liberty will play a first-round game Feb. 20 at Linn-Mar.
West Des Moines Valley (15-5) is the top seed in Substate 5, with Waterloo West (15-4) the second seed. Cedar Rapids Washington and Cedar Rapids Jefferson will play a first-round game against each other in the substate, with Iowa City High playing against Waterloo East.
Dubuque Senior (16-3) also earned a top seed in Substate 3. In Substate 2, Iowa City West (10-9) and Cedar Rapids Prairie (5-14) will play a first-round game at West, with Ankeny Centennial (14-6) the top seed and Cedar Falls (13-5) the second seed.
The other top substate seeds in 4A are Waukee, Waukee Northwest and Norwalk.
In Class 3A, Marion (16-4) is the No. 1 seed in Substate 4, drawing Vinton-Shellsburg (3-17) in a first-round game Feb. 20 at home. That eight-team substate also includes Mount Vernon (13-7) and Charles City (15-5), among others.
Cedar Rapids Xavier (14-5) is the top seed in Substate 5, hosting Clear Creek Amana (5-15) in an opening-round game. Davenport Assumption (11-8), Dubuque Wahlert (10-9), Maquoketa (13-7), Center Point-Urbana (12-9) and Western Dubuque (8-11) are among other teams in the substate.
In Substate 6, Solon (14-5) and Washington (11-8) are the only area schools. Newton (14-5) is the top seed there.
Williamsburg (16-4) and Benton Community (7-13) play a first-round game in Substate 7, an interesting substate geographically that includes top-seeded Waverly-Shell Rock (15-4) and Des Moines Hoover, among others.
Other top substate seeds in 3A are Clear Lake, Webster City, MOC-Floyd Valley and Bondurant-Farrar.
All first-round games in 3A are Feb. 20, with second-rounders Feb. 23 and substate finals Feb. 27. In 4A, opening-round substate games are Feb. 20, second-rounders Feb. 24 and finals Feb. 28.
