David Andrew Thompson, 71, a lifelong Cedar Rapids resident, passed away in his sleep at St. Luke’s Hospital, Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2023, following a brief illness.
A private family service will be held Monday, Jan. 16, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, with interment at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery following the service.
David was born Oct. 8, 1951, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Robert Leonard Thompson and Dorothy (Schmidt) Thompson. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1969, and attended Kirkwood Community College, taking classes in welding and mechanics. David worked in industry and at automobile dealers in Cedar Rapids and Eastern Iowa.
As a youth, David was heavily involved in Boy Scouts of America, with his dad as Scoutmaster, and was a champion bowler, an interest he maintained into adulthood.
He was a veteran and honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1974. David maintained a keen interest in military field artillery tactics, particularly as they were applied during World War II. He was also an avid fan of both the NFL and NASCAR his entire life.
In his later retirement years, David lovingly cared for his elderly parents, allowing them to remain in the home they loved until their passing.
David’s favorite activities centered around his family. He adored his sisters, Barb and Jan, as well as their children and grandchildren. Holidays and visits were highlights of the year for him.
David is survived by his sister, Barb (Neil) Van Slyke; his nieces, Amy (Andy) Richardson, Julie (Kevin) Larsen and Tricia Higson; grand-nieces, Ava Richardson, Violet Richardson, Isabelle Larsen, Avrey Larsen, Kayla (John) Waite and Rochelle (Sam) Hattaway; and grand-nephew, Isaiah Richardson.
David was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jan.
