Doug Streicher lifted Linn-Mar wrestling to new heights. After 27 seasons, Streicher has decided to retire as a head coach. He plans to remain close to the program and help in different roles.

Linn-Mar’s Kane Naaktgeboren ended his high school wrestling career with an undefeated championship season. He became the Lions’ 10th wrestler to win a state crown and the program’s seventh four-time state medalist.

Waverly-Shell Rock won the last three bouts — all by fall — and rallied past No. 8 Linn-Mar, 42-36, in a Class 3A boys’ wrestling regional dual Tuesday night at Linn-Mar High School.

Any questions Linn-Mar boys’ wrestling coach Doug Streicher had returning from the holiday break were answered in a 49-25 win over No. 15 Iowa City High. The Lions also won the girls’ dual, 48-30.

Linn-Mar’s Grant Kress has dedicated his time to wrestling, working on his own skills and improving by helping with the program’s youth club. The Lions’ second-ranked 157-pounder opened the season with a pin, but No. 13 Dubuque Hempstead topped No. 5 Linn-Mar, 37-36, on tiebreak criteria.

Linn-Mar’s Kane Naaktgeboren is a three-time state medalist, returning from a runner-up finish last season. He has prepared for one more shot to climb to the top of the state podium.

Doug Streicher has transformed Linn-Mar into a top wrestling program during his 26-season tenure, becoming the elder statesman of current Mississippi Valley Conference head wrestling coaches. He still finds reward in the progress athletes make on and off the mat.

Fifth-ranked Linn-Mar will be a state wrestling trophy contender, especially after earning 10 state berths and winning the Class 3A district Saturday at Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Iowa City West was second with eight advancing to state in Des Moines.

Linn-Mar’s Brayden Parke, the fourth-ranked 126-pounder, used a third-period escape to edge Iowa City High’s No. 7 Kael Kurtz. He notched one of the Lions’ nine wins in a dual victory over the Little Hawks.

Tate Naaktgeboren captured the 160-pound state title last season. The top-ranked junior will attempt to become Linn-Mar’s third wrestler to win multiple state crowns.
