Welden W. “Butch” Reiten, 75, of Coralville, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Dec. 20, 2022, at UIHC, Iowa City.
Butch was born Oct 14, 1947, to Howard and Erna (Henke) Reiten. He grew up in Granite Falls, Minn., where his love of sports began. You could find him on the basketball court, baseball field, football field and anywhere else where any sort of sport was being played. He later coached little league teams as well.
Butch graduated from St. Cloud State University with a business degree. He worked as a manager at many places in the Coralville/Iowa City area starting with Pizza Hut, The Red Stallion, Coastal Mart and Oral-B. He was great with numbers and very proud of his check book balancing to the penny each month.
Butch was a sports nut, specifically loving the CUBS, Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Vikings. One of his favorite things was participating in fantasy football. He loved beating the Engineers at Oral B. He was like a walking encyclopedia of sports!
Butch also had a love of animals, having many dogs and cats over the years.
Butch was a resident of Coralville, Iowa, for over 45 years. In his younger days you could find him at Coral Lanes bowling in several leagues and Edgewater Park playing softball.
Butch also loved spending time with his kids and grandkids. He was known to always have candy for them and would give them the change in his pockets.
After suffering a stroke in June 2022, Butch became a resident at Windmill Manor. He worked very hard in physical therapy and was a favorite with the staff and residents.
Butch is survived by his daughter Tracy (Chad Kron) of Tiffin, Iowa; his son Andrew (Nichole) of Metamora, Ill., and son Nicholas (Amber) of North Liberty, Iowa; grandchildren Elaina, Jonah, Welden, Jack, Abel, Milo and Rowen Reiten; grand dogs Stella and Slinky Reiten and beloved cat Clark Reiten. Butch also is survived by his brother Jerry (Addie) Reiten of Minnesota and numerous extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, cousins, aunts, uncles and many beloved pets.
A celebration of Butch’s life will be held in January at Lensing’s Oak Hill, Coralville. Specific times will be listed closer to the date of the service. In honor of Butch, if you do attend his celebration of life, we encourage you to wear your favorite sports gear. Do not feel the need to dress up, he wouldn’t want you to. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed toward the Friends of the Animal Center Foundation.
