David Edward Zahn
Cedar Rapids
David Edward Zahn died unexpectedly at his home on Dec. 15, 2022, from complications following a recent surgery. A funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, at St. Pius X Parish in Cedar Rapids. Fathers Richmond Dzekoe and Jon Seda will preside over the service. A private burial will be held at a later date.
Dave is survived by his wife, Suzanne, and their son, Brogan; brother, Tom (Rebecca) Zahn; and sister, Annette Titera.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Horst and Virginia Zahn.
Dave was born Sept. 28, 1963, in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Kennedy High School and Mount Mercy University, playing baseball at both schools. Dave joined the Cedar Rapids Police Department, where he was an officer for 32 years. He also served as the Cedar Rapids Public Safety Commissioner for six years, then returned to the department to serve in various roles.
Dave had a long career of helping people. As a police officer, he cared for many lost animals, including rescuing a kitten and a family of ducks from the interstate. He could be seen changing tires for stranded motorists, helping the homeless and using radar to clock his neighbor’s pitching speed. The Xavier Community knows him as the officer who kept 42nd Street safe from speeders.
Dave’s greatest joy in life was his son Brogan. At some point, Dave coached every sport Brogan played in elementary and middle school. He loved working with the teams and watching all the players grow up to be high schoolers. Xavier’s state football title was a big moment for the proud dad. Dave supported Brogan in everything he did on and off the football field. That love and support extended to Jon Collins, an honorary member of the Zahn family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any of the places Dave loved and supported most: Cedar Rapids Animal Control, Olivet Neighborhood Mission, and the Xavier Foundation.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the Cedar Rapids Police Department, the Xavier Community and Suzanne’s Metro High School Family.
Online condolences may be left for the family at cedarmemorial.com under obituaries.
