Vivian’s Soul Food closes all locations in Cedar Rapids
Owners cite “residual impacts” of the economy in the aftermath of the pandemic

CEDAR RAPIDS — Vivian’s Soul Food closed its two restaurants in Cedar Rapids Wednesday after more than 5 years in business.
“Unfortunately, COVID followed by unprecedented times in our economy have brought residual impacts that are worsening with each day that we optimistically attempt to operate,” the owners said in a social media announcement. “We are unsure of the exact immediate next steps at this time, but even with the closure of the business we are not deterred from having heavy involvement and influence in our community.”
The owners said they “plan to be back in the future,” where they will apply their experience to their next venture.
Jerome and Briana Smallwood opened Vivian’s Soul Food on 16th Avenue SW in July 2017 with a menu focusing on soul food like fried catfish, fried chicken and smothered pork chops with a range of sides. In January 2020, they moved to 2925 Williams Pkwy. SW with a bigger menu for a bigger space.
In February 2021, community enthusiasm for the food prompted them to open a second restaurant, Vivian’s Express Grill at the Fountains in northeast Cedar Rapids where a few favorite dishes were served alongside some lighter fare including burgers, Philly sandwiches, po’boy sandwiches and salads.
The local business owners won multiple local awards for their soul food, including The Gazette’s 2021 Business Award.
The closing leaves Cedar Rapids with very few choices for restaurants focusing on Southern-inspired soul food, especially with dine-in options.
The next closest soul food restaurant offering dine-in is SugaPeach at 650 Pacha Pkwy. in North Liberty.
