Helen T. Goldstein died peacefully at University Hospital on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022, with her daughter Rachel by her side. She was 92.
Funeral services will be held at noon, Wednesday, Nov. 16, at Agudas Achim Congregation. Burial will follow at Agudas Achim Cemetery. Shiva will be held at Agudas Achim at 6:30

Helen was born Oct. 4, 1930, in Chicago, the daughter of Louis and Etta (Shulman) Tunik.
She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree fro
m the University of Chicago in 1948. She then earned her Master of Arts and doctorate in
Semitic
languages and History from Radcliffe College, finishing in 1956. She then had an AAUW Traveling Fellowship to Oxford University 1957-58.
She married Jonathan Goldstein Feb. 1, 1959, in Philadelphia. They spent the following year in Israel, while Jonathan studied at the Hebrew University on a Fulbright, then moved to Iowa City in 1962, when he joined the History and Classics departments. Helen joined the faculty of the School of Religion in 1968, where she taught until she and Jonathan retired in 1995. She was the author of Averroes’ Questions in Physics as well as numerous scholarly articles.
Following their retirement, Helen and Jonathan fulfilled their dream of traveling the world, including a trip to Antarctica. Helen was a fine amateur pianist and a lover of classical music. She supported progressive and charitable causes and was an active participant in community affairs as long as her health allowed. She kept her intellectual curiosity and keen sense of humor until the end of her life.
Helen is survived by her daughters, Rise and Rachel (Stephen Lester); and her sister, Joyce Pollack.
Her husband, Jonathan, preceded her in death in 2004.
