Cedar Rapids Fire Department stresses fireworks safety
The Cedar Rapids Fire Department is warning residents this week that one type of a fireworks that causes the most injuries each year is also one of the few that are legal to possess in the state.
Sparklers cause many of the 5,000 fireworks-related injuries resulting in emergency room visits each year, warned Cedar Rapids Fire Special Projects Coordinator Greg Buelow. Sparklers burn at roughly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
Sparklers, caps and snakes are the only fireworks legal to possess in Iowa.
Buelow advised that parents and caregivers carefully monitor children to prevent them from possessing illegal or dangerous fireworks or misusing legal ones.
