Tuesday’s best: 3 area Iowa high school volleyball regional matches to watch

The postseason trail continues Tuesday for Iowa high school volleyball teams with Class 5A and Class 4A regional quarterfinals.

Here are three of the area’s best matchups; all matches Tuesday begin at 7 p.m.

Cedar Rapids Washington (2-29) at Cedar Rapids Jefferson (8-22)

Class 5A Region 4

Jefferson owns three wins over Washington this season, all in straight sets, and has won 17 straight over the Warriors in a streak that began in 2013. J-Hawks four-year setter Allie Barlow has collected more than 2,000 assists in her career, and shares the setting role with Emma Slings this year while leading the team in kills at 3.59 kills per set. Junior Breanna Franklin leads Washington’s attack at 1.93 kills per set. The winner advances to play at No. 1 Iowa City Liberty (28-8) on Thursday.

Iowa City West (10-21) at Waterloo East (15-12)

Class 5A Region 6

In its first year out of the Mississippi Valley Conference, Waterloo East has discovered success in the Iowa Alliance Conference, winning the North Division championship. Yet, Iowa City West is the favorite in this one. Though well below .500, West has played a challenging schedule and possesses a good terminator in junior Melae' Lacy (2.95 kills per set). East is an experienced outfit, with most of its key pieces as seniors. That includes leading hitter Natalie See (2.64 kills per set, .376 efficiency). The victor plays at Johnston (22-9) on Thursday.

Mason City (11-20) at Decorah (18-12)

Class 4A Region 6

Decorah spent a good amount of the season in the 4A rankings, but has struggled down the stretch, losing its final nine matches after an 18-3 start. The Vikings will try to right the ship behind the attacking of senior Amelia Dugger (3.34 kills per set, .422 kill efficiency). Mason City, on the other hand, is riding a four-match winning streak. The winner plays at Charles City (25-10) on Thursday.
