Donald J. Misel, 89, of Marengo, formerly of Amana, passed away Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022, in Leesburg, Fla. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 10, 2022, at the First Presbyterian Church, Marengo, with Rev. Anni Thorn and Rev. Diane Vorhies officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, 2022, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post #76 and the United State Navy Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Don is survived by his daughter, Kim (George) Scott of Marengo; four grandchildren, Jamie Scott (William Wolter) of Homestead, Alex Scott of Marengo, Kara (Cody) Wuchter of Solon and Katy (Michael) Kline of Kapolei, Hawaii; a brother, Al Misel of Marengo; a sister, Jacqulyn Peterson of Marengo; a niece, Sari (Raymond) Hacker of Marengo; three nephews, Todd (Robin) Misel of Ankeny, David (Amy) Peterson of Schoolcraft, Mich., and Don Al (Bronwyn) Peterson of Peyton, Colo.; a daughter-in-law, Jan Misel of Solon; a special sweetheart, Karen Moline; and extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn; his parents, Michael and Blanche Misel; a son Chris; and a sister-in-law, Betty Misel.
Donald James Misel was born April 21, 1933, in Marengo, the son of Michael and Blanche (Holley) Misel. He graduated from Marengo High School in 1953. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy, served during the Korean War as a member of the USS Shields DD596. After completing his Navy enlistment, Don continued his education at Iowa State University. He was united in marriage to Marilyn Stuck on Sept. 5, 1959, at the Little Brown Church, in Nashua. Don was a longtime resident of Amana, before moving to Marengo. He was employed at Collins Radio for 33 years as a commercial artist. Don was a member of the Masonic Lodge #364, Fairfax, and the Past Master of the Marengo Lodge before it closed. Don also was a member of the Marengo American Legion Post #76, president of the Iowa County Historical Society, Amana Heritage Society and the Amana Arts Guild. He loved traveling and going to Florida and attending his grandkids’ events through the years. Don enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes play and going to the Cedar Rapids Roughrider hockey games, as well as collecting Tinkertoys and Lincoln Logs.
