David Lee Nemec, 84, of Fairfax, passed away peacefully from an extended illness on Friday, Sept. 30, 2022, in his home. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at St. John XXIII Catholic Church, located 8100 Roncalli Dr. SW, Cedar Rapids, where viewing will be one hour prior to services. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
David was born Oct. 26, 1937, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Emil and Mildred (Zitek) Nemec. He graduated from St. Wenceslaus High School, and later attended Iowa State University. David served in the Iowa Army National Guard for over seven years. David was united in marriage Joanne Krummel on June 25, 1959, at St. John Catholic Church in Lisbon. He and his wife farmed together on the family farm near Fairfax. He enjoyed going to tractor pulls, car races, traveling with friends and, most of all, spending time with his loving family, especially the grandchildren.
David is survived by his wife, Joanne; his children, Dan (Keely) Nemec, Marlene (Jeff) Parr, Teresa (Tom) Lowe and Douglas (Bonnie) Nemec; 10 grandchildren, Megan Nemec, Sarah (Zach) Kopriva, Lisa (Blake) Scheer, Joel (Jenna) Parr, Kristen (Andrew) McEvoy, Nicole Lowe, Jacob Lowe, Shawn (Shelby) Nemec, Mitchell Nemec and Brooke Nemec; 11 great-grandchildren, soon to be 12; sisters-in-law, Arlene Jilovec and Janet Himmelsbach; brother-in-law, Merle Krummel; as well as nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Gary; his sister, Judith (Don) Westcott; brothers-in-law, Keith Jilovec and Ben Himmelsbach; and a sister-in-law, Judy Krummel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family or to the charity of choice.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to the staff at Essence of Life Hospice and Cornerstone Caregiving for their loving care of David.
